10 Damn Cool Winter Buys

Written by admin, Wednesday, November 19th, 2008 in Doing it Right, Fashion

It’s winter, lots of things are coming out, and lots of sales are going on- so we’ve compiled a list of some awesome Winter items you can pick up today for fairly cheap to improve your wardrobe.

If you are thinking about a watch, consider something small and stylish- avoid "heavy", bulkier watches. Nice, smaller metal or leather banded watches can be worn in a variety of situations, even with a suit, without seeming too ostentatious or "heavy". Pictured, a Fossil watch, is not perfect, but it gives you an idea of a "smaller" men's watch. Pictured: Fossil Multifunction Brown Dial, $115

Any tips for people living in the Southern California? Our winters are not cold. lol It was 90°F today.

  2. Yum22Yum23 says:

I would say “same thing, without those inplying it’s cold (scarves for example).
On a sidenote, item 10: “Buy a scarves”, is probably one of the worst grammar mistakes I’ve ever seen.

  3. Kirk says:

    Fixed. I is are idiot.

  4. Voro says:

Damn, you put my whole wardrobe (minus the tie clip) onto this…

  5. Yum22Yum23 says:

It still seems to me you are reluctant to wear hats, if anything, winter is _the_ season for hats. (Also it is better to wear something on the top of your head in winter to keep the heat from flowing away)
Fedoras are the more common hats, bowler hats are much less seen (and seem to stick with a more “rock” feeling), I’d say beret but that sounds outrageously french. Trillbies aren’t my cup of tea, and that’s about all I know.

  6. Ishimaru says:

Wow. This is so weird. Like. Damn surreal. Have you been following me or something Kirk? Because a week before I saw this I literally went out and bought Eighty if not Ninety percent of the things on this list. Not even joking. Like Everything. (Yeah, vests can kick some serious ass. I myself picked up two or three. and they work exceptionally well. Also, Alternative to wearing a Tie with one; I have a white dress shirt I wear it with that has no collar almost. Just the part of the collar that goes up and no fabric that folds down. I think it looks pretty grand. I just don’t know what it’s called.)

Anyways, way to be on the same wavelength! And I entirely support this list and all comments therein. Seal of Approval!

Oh, dangit. I’m all opposite of this list. I only buy ties with patterns, I never buy dress shirts with patterns and I bought this amazing black coat recently. I don’t even own tuxedo shirts, sweaters or vests. At least I got the watch right.
And speaking of hats, I recently discovered I look really good with a bowler hat. But I can’t find any stores that sell them. Too bad…
I do need to buy scarves, thanks for reminding me.

  8. Kirk says:

Bo- This isn’t exactly a list of what you must have, rather it’s a list of some things that I think might be interesting to purchase. By all means, I don’t have some of this, and I don’t expect you to have it existing either.

Tuxedo shirts are hard to work with anyway.

  9. Yum22Yum23 says:

Well, this list is neither exhaustive nor completely right. While dark brown tones on jackets and coats may be trendy now, it’s nothing new, and that doesn’t mean a regular black or dark blue coat is bad.
For proper hats you’ll have to find a proper hat maker, none of the usual stores have, or even care to have real ones.

  10. Asa says:

Kirk, you rock! Thanks for the update. It’s the logical continuation of last season, so I’m not out of style (yet!).

  11. Jim says:

It was my understanding that ties were supposed to be around $50. Same with dress shirts. I don’t think I own a single tie or dress shirt worth less than that except for one shirt that is too big for me.

  12. Lionvista says:

I guess I might get reamed on fashion, but here in the midwest USA, I get a lot of positive reaction to the 4 or 5 Jerry Garcia neckties I wear. They have deep colors and I dunno. I like them.

  13. Sarafan says:

    A note on Tuxedo Shirts:
I work for a Catering company, and go through a LOT of these whites. You can get them cheaper than most T-shirts if you know where to shop. If you have a “Michael’s Arts & Craft Store” in your area, you can buy tux shirts for about 10 bux each, with a black clip bow tie. They hide them near the white tees

Also, the EB merino V-Neck piles like cheap socks, but if you scour Marshall’s, Ross, or TJ maxx long enough you can find one for less than $20.

  14. Deed says:

I’d like to support Yum’s note on hats. While you could frown upon me for buying an £8 trilby (wearing it with a half-folded brim) from H&M, I don’t think I sport it too badly, particularly with a decent scarf, a plain jacket and earthy canvas trousers. On a more pretentious note, I’m a bit of a jazzist and I suppose glasses sort of lend towards a jazz look as well.

Really though I did intend to have the hat first for a lighthearted fancy dress thing. I guess the hat could be tongue-in-cheek?
