If you live in the United States, Levis are cheap, and they are durable. The 501xx "shrink to fit" series is the closest to raw Levis denim that can be gotten cheaply, and they are phenomenal jeans -- not only do they hold up very well, but they shrink to fit the wearer, ultimately personalizing the fit in a way that even expensive brands cannot do. While the 501xx series is not nearly as heavy as some other brands (especially Japanese denim, which can be so heavy and stiff that it can stand up by itself), the relative cheapness of the 501xx series cannot be beaten. For those of you outside the US, look for similar brands -- the simpler and sturdier the better.
