How do I dress in a way that doesn’t make me look like a n—-r?
No matter what I put on. I still have the feeling that I look like someone you’d find hanging on a corner.
Actually, you don’t have to worry that much about the stereotypical “gangster look”- it’s easier to fight than you think.
First off, you probably already know the basic rules, but I’ll reiterate them anyway. Whatever you buy, keep it classy and well fitted- avoid any type of clothing that has excessive bagginess to it, as that’s generally the number one indicator of the “gangster” look. There are no special rules about where to shop (the same rules apply to you as everyone else, obviously, so all of my advice on this website applies the same), just avoid any kind of bagginess, if you can help it.
Still, don’t be afraid to mess around with color and patterns. Darker skin tones actually work well with a lot of colors, even pastels, quite a bit better than the typical pale white boy- just look at some of the Polo Ralph Lauren ads. Don’t be afraid to wear colors like light pink, lighter blues, and colors like that- bright colors are your friend.
As for the actual type of clothing to wear, if you REALLY want to shake the whole street freak look, I say go more professional than anything else. Wear slightly formal clothing (i.e. blazers, nice shoes, etc) and spice it up with bright color- make it casual, but keep the sleek tone to it. You could even go a little preppy (like Polo Ralph Lauren, as I mentioned before) and rock those out- you really have unlimited possibilities here.
But generally, I wouldn’t worry too much about looking like a “gangster”- as quickly as that scene is dying out, if you make even a little effort, it’s very unlikely people will lump you into that category. Nonetheless, good luck!
